Settling Phenomena in Casting Furnaces: A Fundamental and
Settling Phenomena in Casting Furnaces: A Fundamental and Experimetnal Investigation
J.-P. Martin, G. Dube, D. Frayce, R. Guthrie
Although the importance of settling in controlling the concentration of non-metallic inclusions in aluminum melts has long been recognized, its quantitative study has so far been limited, due largely to the combined difficulties in estimating the parameters of the separation process and in obtaining quantitative measurements. This paper will present experimental inclusion concentration data, measured under a variety of casting conditions, whose analysis, when coupled to simple mathematical models, helps establish a clearer understanding of the physical processes at work during settling . The advantages of using in-line inclusion measurement techniques during the casting period to elucidate complex physical phenomena will be illustrated.
